Always on Call: When Illness Turns Families into Caregivers (United Hospital Fund Book)

Always on Call: When Illness Turns Families into Caregivers (United Hospital Fund Book) Review

Combining powerful personal stories with astute analysis and recommendations, Always on Call reveals the hidden struggles of the more than 25 million family caregivers in the United States. While family members have always provided care for one another, recent changes in health care have placed tremendous new responsibilities on them--responsibilities that, only a decade ago, were a routine part of hospital care. The prevalence of chronic rather than acute illness, trends toward shorter hospital stays, increased outpatient care, and limited insurance benefits for in-home care now leave family caregiving as the only option for many Americans.

This book, first published in 2000 and now substantially updated, presents an intimate look at the world of family caregiving. The compelling narratives by caregivers capture the intensity of the caregiving experience, while chapters by noted health care professionals, many of whom speak of their own experiences, analyze the impact of caregiving, urge more professional advocacy on behalf of caregivers, and offer insightful suggestions for building partnerships for change and fostering improvement. This second edition includes:
- caregiving as a workplace dilemma
- the added burdens of end-of-life caregiving
- clinician-family conflicts (and new approaches for resolving them)
- new federal and state policy initiatives
- resources for families and professionals
- a new section on innovative caregiving programs
- new chapter on the financial impact of caregiving

Designed for family caregivers, health professionals, administrators, pastoral care providers, policymakers, patient and caregiver advocates, and human resource professionals, Always on Call is an essential book for understanding the current realities of family caregiving. Equally important, it builds a compelling case for change.

The authors of the bestselling Mental Wellness in Adults with Down Syndrome turn their attention to the physical health of teens and adults with Down syndrome.

Drs. Chicoine and McGuire provide invaluable insight into what health problems are more common in their patients, and how medical issues can present differently in people with Down syndrome. In a clear, empathetic style, they discuss how to promote a healthy lifestyle to prevent problems, and how to recognize health problems early on to ensure appropriate care and the best outcome. THE GUIDE TO GOOD HEALTH is a resource families and caregivers can refer to over and over again, whether it s to find strategies to get a teen or adult to cooperate with treatment, or to consider if a symptom is being misdiagnosed or misunderstood.

Key topics include: -Characteristics of Down syndrome that can affect health care; -More commonly occurring medical issues; -The connection between mental & physical health; -Dealing with hospitalizations; -Long term health and well being throughout the lifespan; -Advance directives and end of life issues; -Specific medical conditions (ranging from skin and nail problems, eye, nose and throat issues, and cardiac concerns, to thyroid disorder, diabetes, Alzheimer disease, and sleep problems).

For each condition, the authors discuss symptoms, the diagnostic process, and treatment options. Real-life examples from the authors decades of experience help to illustrate how some medical problems can mistakenly be attributed to characteristics of Down syndrome. As the average person with Down syndrome lives considerably longer than in previous generations, THE GUIDE TO GOOD HEALTH can also help families know what to expect during the aging process.

Counseling Problem Gamblers: A Self-Regulation Manual for Individual and Family Therapy (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional)

Counseling Problem Gamblers: A Self-Regulation Manual for Individual and Family Therapy (Practical Resources for the Mental Health Professional) Review

Over the past decade, legal wagering has expanded rapidly in North America. In 1998 alone, people lost 50 billion dollars in legal betting and it is estimated that illegal wagering is twice that amount. A recent government report, based on the broadest population survey, concludes that the lifetime and pathological gamblers in the U.S. range between 4 and 10 million persons and is growing. If we include the families affected by problem gambling then the potential impact is indeed prodigious. Virtually no community in the U.S. and Canada is left untouched by entertainment or problem gambling. Treating problem gambling has evolved from a small group of practitioners in the 1980's working in specialty impatient units into an international enterprise that affects the caseload of many mental health professionals. Owing to its quiet origins, problem gambling treatment strategies are not well known throughout the clinical community. Consequently the average clinician is him/herself "learning as they go." This approach does not benefit either client or therapist. As the book's first chapter makes clear, problem gambling differs significantly from substance abuse, its nearest clinical relative. Not attending to these differences leads to poor results and clinical failure. This book is the one essential tool needed by clinicians treating or likely to treat problem gambling. Written by a clinician with wide experience, it is intended for the general clinician treating or likely to treat problem gambling desiring a comprehensive, yet user-friendly guide.

Key Features
* Assessment and treatment of problem gambling and those affected by it is discussed
* Includes diagnostic instruments developed by the author
* An integrative approach is taken with a special focus on cultural concerns and clinical applications for women and minorities
* Integration of spirituality in treatment is covered

The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health

The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health Review

With the publication in 1996 of The Harvard Guide to Women's Health, women seeking answers to questions about their health had access to the combined expertise of physicians from three of the world's most prestigious medical institutions: Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. With complete information on women's health concerns, physical and behavioral, this A to Z reference quickly became a definitive resource, praised especially for its coverage of topics not previously considered under the umbrella of women's health. The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health reunites the authors to bring a valued health reference up to date for a new generation--and for those women who have come to rely on the Harvard Guide and are now wondering what to do about their health as they enter a new stage of life, asking questions like the following:

  • I've been on hormone replacement therapy. Should I stop? How?

  • Could this rash be lupus?

  • I've been on the Pill. What is my risk for stroke?

  • Fat is bad, fat is good: What should I believe? And what's left to eat?

  • When does ordinary worry become chronic anxiety?

  • What screening tests do I need now?

In addition to revised recommendations reflecting the current medical thinking on menopause and hormone replacement therapy, the New Harvard Guide includes

  • updated recommendations about cardiac health and heart disease--the #1 killer of women in the United States

  • entries reflecting recent advances in the understanding and treatment of autoimmune diseases

  • better coverage of health concerns throughout a woman's life span, from her first period to menopause and beyond, with a new entry on perimenopause

  • expanded nutritional recommendations, including a unique chart of the U.S. government's Daily Reference Intakes for micronutrients, broken down for teens and women whose needs may differ because they are pregnant, breastfeeding, or postmenopausal

  • updated information on over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, procedures, screenings, and diagnostic tests

The Military Family: A Practice Guide for Human Service Providers

The Military Family: A Practice Guide for Human Service Providers Review

Today, there are more military family members than there are total uniformed service members. Sixty percent of the military are married, including more than eighty percent of all career-status personnel, and many have small children. They come from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and they represent a wide variety of family types, including single parents, dual career military couples, and families with eldercare responsibilities. In an effort to cut costs, many of the services utilized by military families are being privatized or outsourced to civilian service providers. This guide is designed to benefit anyone who provides services to these families, particularly those who may have little or no prior knowledge of the unique nature of military families and military family life. This book contains research-based information about the unique needs of military families across various duty-related conditions, as well as within the context of military career demands. Its multi-service focus addresses the provision of human services in both peace and wartime. Topics include military spouse employment, retirement issues, family support during deployments, the New Parent Support Program, and the experiences of adult children of military parents. The authors encourage an understanding of military community-based programs and services, and they offer the reader numerous resources for collaboration with the military community.

The Legion Bollinger Family of the Catawba River Valley, Vol. I

The Legion Bollinger Family of the Catawba River Valley, Vol. I Review

Within these pages is a chronicle of the history and people of the Legion Bollinger Family who settled and still live in and around the Catawba River Valley of North Carolina. This family history has been divided into two volumes, the first covers generations one through nine, 1658 to about 1900 and the second covers generations ten through thirteen, from around 1900 to the present.

Legion came to North Carolina in the late 1790s and settled with his family in Lincoln County (now Catawba County), west of the Catawba River. It is through Legion's family that we trace our family tree back to the seventeenth century to the Aar River region of Aargau, Switzerland.

Jacob Bollinger (Legion's great, great, great grandfather) lived in Switzerland in the late 1600s. His fourth child, Bernhardt Bollinger moved his family to the Western Palatinate region of Germany in the early 1700s. From the Palatinate, three brothers, Christian, Hans Jacob, and Rudolph immigrated to America in the 1730s and settled in Pennsylvania to raise their families. Several generations later Legion's mother, Margaret Bollinger, migrated down the Great Wagon Road with her children to North Carolina.
